Cauquenina, Clos des Fous, Chile 2012
A fruity nose of redberries, redcurrant, black cherry, blueberry, with hints of black pepper. These elements come through on the palate with fresh black and red fruit revealing a full-bodied wine, before opening up further to be generous and silky smooth on the palate. The wine shows very fine tannins, and the excellent acidity enhances its liveliness and balance. Decanting is recommended. Enjoy with barbecue, lamb, steak, and firm cheeses.
‘Fous‘ is the French word for ‘crazy men‘, a reference to what the winemakers' peers thought of their 'crazy' idea to source grapes from vineyards in the extreme conditions further south and east of Chile. We don't think they were mad at all - the end result was well worth it.
